So Much for the City

To write their debut album, the Thrills moved from Dublin to California. Perhaps their record label thought the Irish quintet would return with razor-sharp observations of L.A. life from an outsider’s perspective. In fact, they returned with the indispensable news that “Hollywood kids” “sure like to dance” and that San Diego is “where all the kids go.” If their lyrics stink, their music acts like air freshener: a harmony-laden soft-rock jangle that does everything to charm the listener short of offering to help with the household chores. It’s nicely done, but the relentless cheerfulness grates, and the occasional forays into country are about as convincing as Johnny Depp’s Oirish accent in Chocolat.
