The Fiery Furnaces make the kind of racket that could come only from a family rec room. Comprising the brother-sister duo of Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger (with help from drummer Ryan Sawyer), the Furnaces play with whimsical charm, so the band seems more like an arts-and-crafts project than an occupation. Eleanor’s elastic, enchanting, confusing voice sounds alternately like a male falsetto; a bluesy diva teasing the boys on “I’m Gonna Run”; and a child having a sing-along on “Up in the North,” where she conveys a quirky, engaging personality with a dry sense of humor. Like her voice, the music jumps around with ease. From sea chantey to garage-rock, vaudeville to off-kilter electronic pop, the Friedbergers make a beautiful mess down in the basement.
