Always Got Tonight

With his pompadoured good looks and matinee-idol voice, Chris Isaak has all the qualities of stardom — circa 1958. Still, for a man out of time, he’s doing well, with a successful cable-TV comedy (Showtime’s The Chris Isaak Show) and what may be the best CD of his career. Packed with coolly dramatic heartbreak ballads, it moves easily between the brooding, low-key “Worked Out Wrong” and the stomping boogie of “Always Got Tonight.” And while none is likely to duplicate the success of 1990’s “Wicked Game,” it’s easy to imagine “Cool Love” having been a huge hit for Roy Orbison.
