A Vocoder-enhanced spectator on her own album, Cher’s sole songwriting contribution is “additional lyrics” on the feisty “The Music’s No Good Without You.” It doesn’t matter. She’s merely the ice-cold monotone atop 12 high-energy belters, straight from a gay disco circa 1982 (which is ironic, given her less-than-pleased reaction to her daughter Chastity’s Sapphic lifestyle). As it happens, belting out admirable anthems such as “(This Is) A Song for the Lonely” is one of many roles Cher is made for, and she makes a fine job of it. She fails when the songs require a singer’s intuition — when someone covers “When the Money’s Gone” properly, the world will listen — but at least this keeps her off the streets.
