Now That’s What I Call Music Vol. 7

The Now series’ simple formula—compile an album of 18 or so hits and get it into stores before the songs’ shelf-life expires—has long been platinum-validated. Now 7 follows suit, but weakly, offering the usual assortment of pop, R&B and hip-hop chart toppers, from Janet’s “All for You” and 3LW’s “Playas Gon’ Play” to Aerosmith’s “Jaded” and American Hi-Fi’s “Flavor of the Weak.” But there are a lot of B-list songs from A-list acts (“The Call” is the Backstreet Boys’ weakest to date), and forgettable songs from B-list artists (hello, Evan & Jaron). Even the strongest songs on 7, such as Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor,” are a tad overfamiliar by now.
