Hailing from Kansas City, the hilariously named Puddle of Mudd spent eight years wallowing in the heartland, honing their early-’90s brand of guitar rock (think Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) before signing with Limp Bizkit frontman and Interscope VP Fred Durst. Their major-label debut supplies the requisite volume, and their attitude is rude enough to fit in at Ozzfest, but unlike their mentor’s outfit, Mudd are slightly more tuneful. “Bring Me Down” bashes energetically with a sly “Suffragette City” reference, while “She Hates Me” is amusingly goofy. There are worse ways to bang your head.
