Being both funny and tuneful is quite a talent for a songwriter, and it’s a combination that Cake’s John McCrea demonstrated on “The Distance,” the 1996 single that put the northern California modern-rock band on the map. It not only helped push Cake’s mildly funky Fashion Nugget to platinum but established the recipe McCrea and company have used ever since. Now at Columbia Records, McCrea is still spinning wry, keenly observed stories, though the band has broadened its stylistic base some, as the mock Middle Eastern guitar on “Comfort Eagle” attests. But while “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” may elicit smiles, don’t expect surprises.
