Though it’s a decade on from his anxiety-ridden Geto Boys classic “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” Scarface apparently still has hellhounds on his trail. The Fix, his excellent seventh solo album, is fixated on paranoia, particularly on the gritty street narratives “Safe” and “Keepin’ Me Down.” His other preoccupation is spirituality — the lush “Heaven” finds the former Brad Jordan searching for salvation. The Man Upstairs notwithstanding, Scarface knows his best hope is with his own surprisingly adventurous production and arrangement smarts. Whether dabbling with song codas (“Heaven”), Zeppelin-esque melodies (“What Can I Do”) or slippery guitar solos (“In Between Us,” featuring Nas,) ’Face is musically fearless. His mind isn’t playing tricks on him any more.
