Former Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Richard Patrick’s electro-rock outfit Filter is in a position quite similar to that of Mark McGrath’s buff crew, Sugar Ray. A couple of albums in, each scored a huge hit with an acoustic number that, while at odds with their harder roots, is clearly what keeps the customers satisfied. Ever since, Sugar Ray have rewritten that unit-shifter, “Fly,” countless times, with mixed results. Filter, meanwhile, adhere to the blueprint laid down by the breakthrough power ballad “Take a Picture,” from 1999’s platinum Title of Record, with such anguished arena sing-alongs as “The Missing” and “The Only Way Is the Wrong Way.” Elsewhere, they keep things “real” with aggressive despair fare — “You Walk Away,” “Never Be the Same” — but these are strictly for show. The ballads are for dough, and damned catchy they are, too.
