Jamaican-born Jarvis Church made a name for himself as the Grammy-nominated producer of Nelly Furtado’s Whoa, Nelly! Trouble is, that name was Gerald Eaton, Church’s nom de studio since 1997. Maybe he needs an alias to avoid the nut jobs he writes about on his first solo disc. On the spooky, dub-inflected “Fine Line,” Furtado guests as a stripper who stalks Church at home, while the breathless calypso “Run for Your Life” features Canadian chanteuse Esthero as an obsessed, knife-wielding fan. When not dodging psycho killers, Church delivers slick, Caribbean-flavored R&B spiked with Prince-like falsetto (“Who Will Be Your Man”) and broad-stroke Lenny Kravitz–style balladry (“All I Ever Wanted”). Converts to Furtado’s globalized pop would do well to visit this Church.
