Blazing Arrow

While most rappers brag about stacking chedda, Blackalicious’s Gift of Gab (Tim Parker) warns that he’ll “hit you with the funk, it’s like who cut the provolone/Government officials put taps on my mobile phone.” Blackalicious, a Northern California duo that grew out of DJ Shadow’s SoleSides crew, are smart B-boys: On “Chemical Calesthenics,” Gab recites the names of chemicals at light speed. Blackalicious use Chief XCel’s spacey beats and lots of illustrious guest stars to stretch hip-hop into soul and R&B terrain. “Release” features Zach de la Rocha, SoleSides rapper Lyrics Born and poet Saul Williams, who declares himself “history’s detergent.” It’s Blazing Arrow’s only misfire, a nine-minute rap tradeoff that’s longer than some wash cycles and just as dull.
