Unlike most thespians who think their talents extend into other realms, actor Jared Leto’s space-metal band, 30 Seconds to Mars, isn’t just a half-assed vanity project. After locking themselves in a Wyoming warehouse for a month, 30STM emerged with an eponymous debut that sounds like Tool on the dark side of the moon. Throbbing synths and exploding guitars swirl around Leto’s vocals, a boyish change from the usual metal growls, narrating 11 tales of living in deep, black oblivion. With apocalyptic song titles (“Edge of the Earth,” “End of the Beginning,” “Year Zero”), 30STM manage a high-minded space opera of epic scope befitting prog-rock prototypes Rush. Another reason for Angela Chase to make eyes at Leto.
