Toronto’s Deborah Cox is a silky R&B singer (and songwriter) who, at the drop of a charging house beat, transforms herself into an old-school disco singer; it’s as if Whitney Houston spun on a dime into the uncanny reincarnation of ’70s-peak Donna Summer. Here Cox spends most of her time off the dance floor, working with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (and others) on accomplished electro- (“Up & Down”) and hip-hop–influenced (“2 Good 2 Be True”) new soul. She closes with “Mr. Lonely” and “Absolutely Not” — two club tunes in the booming tradition of “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” her wildly fused 1998 gospel-into-house rave-up. The high polish and high energy aren’t exact matches, but Cox pulls off both uncommonly well.
