The most compelling song on Cam’ron’s 2006 Killa Season was “I.B.S.,” an appallingly graphic chronicle of the Harlem rapper’s struggles with irritable bowel syndrome. Cam is weird—that’s his charm. So it’s a surprise, but not really, that on the long-awaited follow-up, the self-proclaimed “hymen grinder” leaked “I Hate My Job,” a proletarian anthem dedicated to “the everyday working woman,” as the CD’s first track. Elsewhere, it’s a return to drug-rap and semi-consensual dick sucking (typical: “Bottom of the Pussy Hole”). On “Cookin’ Up,” he shows flashes of the flights of violent wordplay that made 2004’s Purple Haze a classic: “Sledgehammer, smash his melon/I’m the black Gallagher.” But then come 55 different metaphors for female ejaculation, and eventually you realize: The comparison to an aging, beret-wearing prop-comic suffering diminishing returns might be apt in a way Cam’ron didn’t intend.
