No one does dreamlike as well as R.E.M., so no wonder one of their biggest CDs is also their dreamiest. Here, they pair melancholic folk-rock apparitions with hopeful strings: “Everybody Hurts” longs for community; the piano ballad “Nightswimming” hungers for sex and safety; “Man on the Moon” looks back to simpler times without self pity or irony. It’s the R.E.M. to keep under the pillow for your next dark night of the soul.
