Editor’s Picks: March 2007

Kings of Leon, "Charmer," from Because of the Times
Sons of a traveling evangelist fall in love with the Stones and update southern garage rock in the process. This is not from the white-belted, skinny-panted "I'll have an Appletini" school of rock. This is cheap whiskey rock, retooled and fully loaded.

The Fratellis, "Henrietta," from Costello Music
Glasgow, Scotland's Fratellis, who are already a Top 20 act in the U.K., dish out superclever indie rock with ridiculously catchy songs. If your next party features Arctic Monkeys on the iPod and Goonies on the TV, you should send these boys an evite.

Arcade Fire, "The Well and the Lighthouse," from Neon Bible
Yeah, yeah...like they need more friggin' ink. (Not that we even use ink, but whatever.) They're on the cover of every mag (including ours), they've blown up the blogs, and soon we'll all dress like them (if we don't already). But perhaps the greatest accolade bestowed upon these clamorous Canadians is that they have won the hearts of Maxim.com's ultra-hot sex experts Sally and Lindsay. Those bastards!

The Dark Ages, History Channel
Someone must have told these guys that The Great Speeches of Adolf Hitler on endless repeat was no way to build a franchise. The "Discovery Channel for real nerds" serves up actual Medieval history peppered with unintentionally hilarious rampaging hordes of actors still waiting to hear back from Law & Order. To think: At any moment, tomorrow's Liam Neeson might be slumped over a Roman chariot, while miles away, a man can't order a turkey club in a suspiciously understaffed diner. Blame the Visigoths.
