DVD: Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who

“I don’t think I was a bully ... I just loved to fight,” says Who singer Roger Daltrey, looking back on his band’s tumultuous history in this new documentary. The Brits’ combustible chemistry often worked in their favor, as they put their own explosive stamp on the ’60s Motown sound. Nearly as exciting was the backstage drama, which included loads of Swedish models and egos bigger than Kanye West’s. Amazing Journey (which airs on VH1 November 3, prior to its DVD release) looks at the group’s highs (the rock opera Tommy, pioneering the art of smashing guitars) and lows (drummer Keith Moon’s fatal OD) with an unflinching eye — fitting for a band that never pulled any punches.
