Hype Williams: The Videos

Palm Pictures

Hype Williams is an emperor among hip-hop video directors, and this set collects his most imperial clips: Craig Mack’s ultra-high-contrast “Flava in Ya Ear,” Busta Rhymes’s voodoo workout “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” TLC’s icy sci-fi video game “No Scrubs.” His work owes more to art photography than to early music videos — no matter how fast they move, they’re about gorgeous composition, not motion. Too bad his Jay-Z and Ja Rule clips resort to bikini-babe clichés, and that his director-commentary track is mostly about what good friends he is with his stars.
