Being John Lennon: Days in the Life of Sgt. Pepper's Only Dart Board Band

Being John Lennon: Days in the Life of Sgt. Pepper's Only Dart Board Band
By Martin Dimery
SAF Publishing, $15

By day, he teaches drama at a private school in rural Somerset, England. By night, he lives out his dream — or is it his nightmare? — playing John in “the only Beatles tribute band actually older than the originals.” Certainly, Martin Dimery’s Nick Hornby?ish tome is a long way from Mötley Crüe territory. Forget silicone-enhanced groupies and lines of white powder: Dimery’s rock & roll life consists of changing in “cupboard-sized dressing rooms” and performing “with a side cymbal neatly sandwiched between my buttocks.” Being John Lennon isn’t essential reading, but it’s nicely self-deprecating: “ ?I’m too old for this,’ I complain. My wife Anne agrees. What does she know?”
