Producer Terry Melcher drenched it in soggy strings, horns and choruses as a way of covering up for their laziest songwriting: interminable pastiches of ’50s rock & roll, unfunny satire, a throwaway bluegrass instrumental and some half-baked material from the Gene Tryp musical. “Somehow I know that everything’s gonna work out all right,” McGuinn croons, sounding totally unconvinced; Gene Parsons called it “one of my least favorite albums.” The death masks on the cover summarize the state of the band. Justly out of print.
