Their debut proved they were the first U.S. band that could match U.K. rockers—it even ends with the World War II–era British ballad “We’ll Meet Again.” The secret was their top half: McGuinn’s guitar playing expanded George Harrison’s break in “A Hard Day’s Night” into an entire genre, and the sun-baked harmonies made the most of their voices’ eccentricities. Gene Clark was the only Byrd who had bloomed as a songwriter yet, but four Bob Dylan covers gave them folk cachet and gave Dylan rock credibility.
