Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde

Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman had split off to form the Flying Burrito Brothers, so McGuinn assembled a new Byrds, prominently featuring guitarist Clarence White. They were hurting for decent material—the concluding jam/medley is embarrassing—but “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man,” a Parsons-era leftover on which they eviscerate a country-establishment DJ who dissed them, is a venomous delight. The album tanked on release, and McGuinn later admitted it was “more or less contrived”; it’s now out of print.
