The Notorious Byrd Brothers
(Columbia/Legacy)

A surprisingly tender, harmonious album, considering the chaos of its birth: David Crosby was fired after bandmates refused to include his epochal ménage á trois tale “Triad” (it’s on the reissue), and Michael Clarke split a few months later, leaving the band as a McGuinn-Hillman duo augmented with studio musicians. Still, they seemed to be surging forward, experimenting with electronic psychedelia and country, and paying tribute to nature and the nascent hippie culture. Inexplicably out of print.
