The brilliant single “Eight Miles High,” inspired by the dreamy drones of Indian music, was Gene Clark’s farewell to the Byrds—he hated flying, and he quit the band soon after they began sessions for their third album. They were short on material (hence two instrumentals and a peculiar cover of “Hey Joe”), but McGuinn stepped up his game, writing a couple of witty science-fiction songs and playing spark-showering lead guitar that lifted ideas from John Coltrane’s modal jazz improvisations.
