The Beatles were in their death throes when McCartney recorded his solo debut, a collection of lo-fi love songs. The homespun, pointedly un-Beatles-y sound was a kind of provocation, and critics lashed out, closing their ears to the lilting loveliness of ballads like “Junk.” But no one could deny the melody and pop-soul lift of “Maybe I’m Amazed,” an affirmation of enduring love that sums up McCartney’s romanticism.
