The dinky dance song “Stand” made their first Warner Bros. album a hit, and geopolitical punditry like “Orange Crush” established Stipe as one of rock’s premier smart guys. Sadly, it also features his corniest moment, “The Wrong Child,” in which he condescendingly sings in the voice of a disabled kid, keening, “I’m not supposed to be like this!”
