In the early ’90s, it didn’t seem weird to base a video (for “Losing My Religion”) on a story by magical-realist author Gabriel García Márquez or to lead off an album with a bow shot at pop radio, featuring conscious-rap titan KRS-One. This strange, gorgeous record is as ecstatic as it is thorny. Is “Shiny Happy People” their kindest song or their most cynical? The nation’s third-graders sure didn’t care.
