Combat Rock
(Epic/Legacy)

Reviewed by Douglas Wolk
At the time, this passed for their sellout move, thanks to its New York club–inspired atmosphere and two massive MTV hits: “Rock the Casbah,” with a rollicking piano-disco groove devised and played by Headon shortly before drug problems got him ousted, and Jones’s three-chord monster “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” But the rest of the album has audaciously bizarre arrangements and some of Strummer’s smartest lyrics. Guest star on one track: New York poet Allen Ginsberg.
