Her disciple Mary J. Blige helped out with a few songs on this attempt to update her sound to 21st-century smooth R&B. But the tracks produced by Burt Bacharach and by Franklin are still stuck in mid-’80s midtempo-ballad mode, and the material perks up only when it points toward the church. Bad idea: a new song that shares its title with her 1968 hit “Ain’t No Way.”
