The 10th album was her breakthrough, and all it took was a new label, a simpatico band of white guys from Alabama (recording mostly in New York) and songs that conflated spiritual, sexual and political demands. The title track and her spectacular version of Otis Redding’s “Respect” were both No. 1 R&B hits, but every performance is a heart-stopper, from the blisteringly sexy “Dr. Feelgood” to covers of Sam Cooke and Ray Charles — her models for bringing the church to the soul charts.
