His latest stroll into the delicate Harvest sound is also the most poignant: While writing it, he was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. The brush with death lent an emotional depth to songs about life’s simple pleasures, and an undeniable spookiness to the hymn-like closer “When God Made Me.”
