The start of an uncertain period. At a London stadium show in July 1973, Ray announced his retirement. Backstage he overdosed on downers and was carted to the ER in a clown suit. He emerged transformed — not for the better. Ray himself can’t decide if it’s his best work or “experimental theater rock — boring, yawn.” The latter’s more likely.
