The dark side of glam: a cruel, dramatic riposte to Lou Reed’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal, recorded with an eight-piece band on the 1976 leg of the Rolling Thunder Revue, and stuffed with big rock moves. (Start-stop flourishes! Twin guitar leads!) Dylan’s estranged wife Sara was in the audience, and most of the album is an increasingly poisonous series of broken-relationship songs, culminating in 10 seething, purple-faced minutes of “Idiot Wind.”
