Once again a trio, the Cure churned out Seventeen Seconds II, except even more detached and washed-out. It’s heavy on Joy Division–inspired mood and funereal keyboards, and light on everything else. The subsequent single “Charlotte Sometimes” (appended to the reissue, along with outtakes and demos) distilled the album’s atmosphere into a concise, viable song. The title track became a live staple, but most of Faith sounds too depressed to get out of bed.
