ABBA’s “Waterloo” was the irresistible winner of the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and their first worldwide hit. The LP suggests Benny and Björn hadn’t quite worked out the band’s aesthetic yet — ”Watch Out” is a bizarre, glammy stab at hard rock, “My Mama Said” is a low-key soul-jazz groover — and their English was lacking (“I have met my destiny in quite a similar way”). What they did have were tunes, hooks, and Beach Boys/Phil Spector/Beatles-inspired production tricks that lunge out of the speakers.
