After an acrimonious split with Sammy Hagar, Van Halen made the curious decision to recruit former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone as his replacement. Cherone’s previous band had been experts at imitating the VH sound in part, and the singer offered a convincing bellow. Songwise, though, VH3 was as listless as Hagar-led Van Halen at its worst, with the younger singer unable to inject any energy into the lumbering behemoth. After the album flopped (it’s the only VH album that didn’t go platinum), Cherone was quietly cashiered.
