Another double LP, and his first studio album since 1971 that didn’t reach number 1 (even though it featured Graham Nash and David Crosby on backing vocals). Consequently, it’s much underrated. It’s a mature, sprawling work, particularly the epic “Tonight,” but it has an undercurrent of tension. The heavy-drinking Taupin was starting to write about himself instead of for John, who in turn was burned out by the burden of being the world’s most famous pop star and having just admitted to what he called his bisexuality.
