Sweeping up songs left off their first five records alongside new material, this original double-LP set confounded expectations and sustained the excitement over 15 songs, switching styles at random but keeping the quality high. The gentler moments — “Down by the Seaside,” “In the Light” — are still exquisite, but inevitably, it’s the cinematic heavy metal of “Custard Pie” and “In My Time of Dying” — the latter more than 11 minutes of apocalyptic blues — that still punch the air from the lungs 26 years on. Spare a moment’s respectful silence, too, for Bonham’s performance, like a herd of bison stampeding down a stairwell.
