Beware the Monsters of (Soft) Rock!

George Carlin once said, "Soft rock music isn't rock, and it ain't music. It's just soft." Though we could jam out to Ambrosia and 10cc all day long, we have to admit the old bastard had a point: The soft rock scene, despite all the hair, coke and talk of sweet, sweet lovemaking, was a pretty flaccid affair. Still, it did rule the 1970s alongside disco and punk, and everyone from stadium rockers to one-hit wonders seemed to be getting their adult-contemporary groove on, with some catchy — albeit lukewarm and utterly inoffensive — results. Though the soft rock canon is far too star-studded for us to draft anything resembling a comprehensive list, we've somehow summoned our inner yuppies, sifted through Time Life's favorite genre and rediscovered a few of our favorite singles.

David Brent, "Freelove Freeway"
The Office Season 1, 2001

Sure, the Brent Meister General claims to be in his 30s, but you just know the portly bloke is pushing 40. Which means he could have very well penned "Freelove Freeway" in the late '70s, making the song certified soft rock material. Watch this clip and we're sure you'll agree with us when we say: "Thank God he didn't 'drop any drum 'n' bass shit' on top of this stone-cold classic."
