The crowd amassed at New York's Irving Plaza to celebrate Taking Back Sunday's new release, Louder Now, revealed the varied makeup of their burgeoning MySpace friends list hipsters and black hoodie–clad high school girls waited anxiously alongside frat brothers and punk rockers trying to look inconspicuous (sadly, no sign of Tila Tequila). The preset tension ran unusually high as opening act the Honorary Title cleared their gear from the stage, and two minutes before show time, chants of "TBS!" grew increasingly loud, eventually erupting as the lights darkened and the band took the stage.
A thick cloud of pot smoke emanating from an unknown source billowed up from the audience as the band burst into their first song, which was nearly drowned out by the collective singing of the sold-out and already sweaty crowd. Not to be outdone by lead singer Adam Lazzara, guitarist Fred Mascherino put on his best screamo voice for the entirety of the set, even seeming a little too excited for his between-song banter.
The Long Island, New York, natives powered through an hour-long set and a fifteen-minute encore made up of a healthy blend of crowd favorites and songs from the new record, which had been released earlier in the day. The crowd's energy remained high throughout, fueled by the band's sheer volume and Lazzara's incredibly impressive feats of microphone acrobatics. Our perspective from the balcony was a little different than that of the people crowd-surfing and awkwardly slam-dancing, but even though we left free of sweat or bruises, the lyrics provided plenty of new material for our IM profile.
