Oh, Mimi! Mariah Carey Changes Name

Mariah Carey has been known to her friends as Mimi, and now the singer is sharing the nickname with her fans. In a posting on her Web site, Carey explained that the title of her forthcoming album, The Emancipation of Mimi, is based on a "very personal nickname only used by those closest to me." Although the album is not scheduled for release until March 2005, Carey claims the title was leaked to the press, forcing her to explain its origins.
"I am celebrating the fact that I've grown into a person and artist who no longer feels imprisoned by my insecurities or compelled to try and live up to someone else's vision of 'Mariah Carey,'" the singer explains in the statement. "I now feel I can honestly say 'This is me, the real me, take it or leave it.'"
