TV on the Radio Win 2004 Shortlist Prize

Following the Shortlist Concert on Monday night in Los Angeles, Brooklyn-based band TV on the Radio took home the honorable Shortlist Music Prize, beating out finalists Dizzee Rascal, Loretta Lynn, the Streets, Franz Ferdinand and Wilco, among others. The concert aired live on XM Satellite Radio, and highlights of the show will be broadcast on November 20 on MTV2.

TV on the Radio have released three records on the label Touch & Go: their first, a five-song EP entitled Young Liars in July 2003; Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes this past March; and the EP New Health Rock last month. Described as electronic-influenced post-punk, they plan to release their second full-length album in March 2005.

The Shortlist Prize, now in its fourth year, is awarded to artists who have sold less than 500,000 copies of their album at the time of nomination. In addition to the prestigious prize, the artist also receives $10,000 dollars. NME.com reported that vocalist Tunde Adebimpe will use some of the money to pay back-rent and to take his cats to the vet. "I’ve been on tour for 14 months so I want to make sure [my cats] are going to live into the next horrible part of the millennium.…I’m psyched [about winning]. I’m glad."

The nominees are selected by music industry professionals and musicians. This year, judges included Jack Black, Norah Jones, the Dixie Chicks, the Roots' ?uestlove and the Cure's Robert Smith. Former winners include Damien Rice, Sigur Ros and N.E.R.D.
