Useful Tips from the Stars! How To…Tie a Windsor Knot!

1. Dress to Impress
“When I was on trial [for attempted murder; after a hung jury, his new trial will start in 2005], people noticed I was dressed up for court. A Windsor knot, the ‘fat knot,’ is the best kind, especially for a French-cut collar, which is wider than regular shirts. A wider knot fills up space; you look classier.”

2. Give it a Once-Over!
“You want to keep the wide end of the tie long, because you’ll be doing a lot of twisting — and you don’t want the tie too short. The first loop is just like you’re tying a normal tie knot. But for a Windsor, you’re basically doing that same knot twice. The top of the triangle will end up wider than usual.”

3. Do a Double-Take!
“Pull the longer, wider end through the loop, then behind the narrow end again and to the left. Pull that end through the loop again so the wide part’s inside-out. Bring that end through the knot and hold the end as you tighten it — the top of the knot needs to be wider so it’s almost like a triangle.”

4. Suit Up!
“If you’re gonna do the Windsor, you gotta do it right — it says a lot about your character. Everybody should own at least one suit and tie, even if you never wear them — a black suit works for pretty much everything. Wear polka dots with stripes, that’s the thing. And you gotta rock the cufflinks.”
