Missy Elliott, Johnny Cash Top MTV 2003 Video Music Award Nominations

Viewers expecting the upcoming 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards to be dominated by the usual youthful pop acts and current hitmakers have some surprises in store. When MTV recently announced the nominees, country music legend Johnny Cash was given an astounding six nominations for his video for “Hurt,” a remake of the Nine Inch Nails song that appeared on Cash’s album American Recordings IV: The Man Comes Around.

“I am overwhelmed by this great honor,” Cash told MTV. “I thank you all for thinking of me. It’s been 48 years since I cut my first record, and it’s nice that people are still digging them up.”

Ahead of Cash on the nomination list were Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott, who landed eight nominations for her music video “Work It,” and Justin Timberlake, who followed with seven nominations (five for “Cry Me a River” and two for “Rock Your Body”).

Comedian Chris Rock will host the awards show, which will be broadcast live from New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Thursday, August 28 at 8 P.M. (live ET/tape delayed PT). Christina Aguilera and Coldplay are scheduled to perform.
