Grammy Nominees Announced

We know you only watch the Grammys to see who won Best Classical Album. But for the uncultured masses who prefer “popular music,” the upcoming awards ceremony on February 23rd should provide all of the endless weepy acceptance speeches and lip-synched goodness you’ve come to love. Still, don’t expect a Lauryn Hill or Carlos Santana–esque sweep this year; eight artists, including Ashanti, Eminem, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne and Nelly, scored five nominations apiece, and many of the categories seem genuinely up-for-grabs.

And there are other interesting surprises in the nominations, announced on January 7 at New York’s Madison Square Garden; Santana, for instance, is facing a disappointing shutout this year with only one nomination in the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals category (for “Game of Love”) and the youngest nominee in the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance category is 47-year-old Elvis Costello. If you’re taking bets, though, put your money on the ladies—Ashanti, Norah Jones and Avril Lavigne will likely make multiple trips to the podium.
