May 23, 1:15 P.M.
Guitarist Mick Mars calls us from his home in Malibu, California, and is promptly disconnected by a thunderstorm. He tries again a minute later.
“I’m back! I told you the weather was hideous. I’m having some coffee, and then I’m going into my studio to do some writing. I have lots of musicians coming by. Hinder was here a couple of weeks ago, and I wrote some music with DMC. Instead of sitting and drinking, I’m sitting and writing music.
“Next Thursday we start rehearsing for our Crüe Fest Tour. I’m going to have to start getting myself up at ten. Last night I went to bed at four—I was watching Black Christmas. When [the lead character’s] little sister was born, he poked out her eyes and ate them. Sometimes slasher films give me weird ideas for music. Oh, and check this out, this is the best: I was watching Discovery or the History Channel or something, and you know how everyone’s talking about global warming and all that stuff? The reason it’s happening is ’cause they blew a hole in the ozone with all the bombs. During the ’50s and ’60s, they had all those nuclear tests, like over 600 of ’em. And guess what it was called? Project Greenhouse. I saw that and went, Uh huh. There we go.”
Day 2
May 24, 12:30 P.M.
Bassist Nikki Sixx rings us from his home in the San Fernando Valley after a morning at the gym.
“I used to lift a lot of weights. Now I’m doing Pilates and running instead. I run in my neighborhood with Kat [Von D, TV tattoo artist and Sixx’s girlfriend]. She has as many tattoos as I do, so we’re quite the sight in my Stepford community. I never looked at tattoos as part of an image, but it’s become a staple in ‘the look,’ like the flannel shirt. This morning, this lady in Starbucks told me, ‘You’re like a super rocker guy.’ I go, ‘Why?’ She goes, ‘You have all the tattoos.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m pretty much a cliché.’
“This afternoon I’m going out with my sister and my son in my Bentley Continental Flying Spur. I’m the worst driver ever. I’ve lost my license three times. I guess I have a bit of a speeding problem. [To his daughter, Storm]: What do you think, Storm? Ha! She goes, ‘You always get out of it by going: “I’m Nikki Sixx!”’”
