Wilco
Lifelong friends born in the same Belleville hospital in 1967, Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy started a punk cover band in high school with some friends. In 1987 the ensemble tightened its act, altered its material to incorporate country and original songs, and named itself Uncle Tupelo. When they disbanded in 1994, Farrar went on to form Son Volt, while Tweedy and the other members (drummer Ken Coomer, bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Jay Bennett, and banjo and fiddle player Max Johnston) formed Wilco. Their sophomore album, 1996’s Being There, first evinced the reflective, bluesy sound they became known for. Their collaboration in 1998 with Billy Bragg on the album Mermaid Avenue was a celebrated effort that featured unreleased Woody Guthrie compositions.
