One of the leading bands of the '90s punk revival, Southern California-based Pennywise formed in 1988 by high school friends Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Byron McMackin (drums) and Jason Thirsk (bass). They released their debut EP, A Word From the Wise, in 1989, and after signing with Epitaph Records, released their self-titled debut album in '91. The success of their second album, 1993's Unknown Road, attracted major-label offers, but Pennywise stayed with Epitaph. The band was struck with a severe blow when Thirsk committed suicide on July 29, 1996. Pennywise continued on, however, and, with Randy Bradbury on bass, released 1997's Full Circle. In 2000 they released a live album, Live at the Key Club, recorded in Los Angeles.Reviews
