The Red Hot Chili Peppers emerged from the '80s California punk and hip-hop scenes. They combine the funkiness and syncopated lyrical delivery of hip-hop with punked-out guitars and hyper stage antics. The Chili Peppers were profoundly affected by the heroin-overdose death of guitarist Hillel Slovak in 1988. Soon afterward, they scored a number of hits with their albums Mother's Milk (1989) and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). Despite the multiple reorganizations of the band with guitarists John Frusciante and Dave Navarro, they have stayed remarkably relevant in comparison to their peers, enjoying a renaissance in 1999 with Californication.Reviews
