Neo-soul singer-songwriter Erykah Badu (born Erica Wright) grew up in Dallas, Texas, listening to soul and hip-hop. In 1994 she was tapped to open for D'Angelo. She was quickly signed to producer Kedar Massenburg's label, Kedar Entertainment, and he produced her debut album, Baduizm, in 1997. Featuring the No. 1 R&B single "On and On," as well as guest spots by Ron Carter and the Roots, the album soon hit the top of the R&B charts, gaining Badu an opening spot on the Wu-Tang Clan tour. She released a live album, Live, later that year, and in 2000 she released the critically well-regarded Mama's Gun, which featured the single "Bag Lady."Reviews
